MARRIAGE OF FOREIGN NATIONALS IN GREECE
(As adapted from the Greek Consulate Information Document)

Foreign nationals not resident in Greece, wishing to marry may do so, provided that they allow sufficient time for the local authorities to receive and process their application with the necessary documentation in order for them to issue the marriage license. The time required is, at least, eight (8) days.
The documents required to be produced by both persons who intend to marry are the following:

DOCUMENTS YOU NEED
-------------------------------------
Full birth certificate (with parents’ names)
Decree absolute, if there has been a divorce.
Deed Poll, if name has been changed.
2 X Certificate of No Impediment to marriage (this certificate can be obtained from your local Superintendent Registrar) (This document must not be issued more than three (3) months before the desired date of the wedding. It takes approximately a month to be issued by the Registrar).

Finally, all application forms will be obtained from any Town Hall in Greece.
All documents, in English, must be officially certified (legalised) by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (Apostille Seal), Legalisation Department.

Send or take your documents to:

The Legalisation Office
Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Old Admiralty Building
The Mall
London SW1A 2LG

The office is open from 9:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. The nearest tube station is Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo lines). The office is closed on public holidays. The entrance is on the Mall, Spring Gardens.
For help and information (including the 24-hour recorded information service): 020 7008 1111 from 10:00am to 12:00pm and then from 2:00pm to 3:00pm Monday to Friday.
The FCO Legalisation Office Web Site could be found by clicking here.

You should then translate the documents into Greek. Please send them into the following address:

P. Hahamis
Translations
38 Boyne Road
London SE13 5AW

Next step is to legalize the signature of the Official Translator at the Greek Consulate in London:

Translations Department, Consulate General of Greece, 1A Holland Park, London W11 3TP

Please note the following:
• Allow enough time prior to your departure, or telephone before you post them to find out the waiting time.
•At present, the cost of translating such documents is £26 - £40.00 each (for documents sent after 1 st May 2000), payable in cash or postal orders and in advance. (Personal cheques however may be accepted). Special package offers may be available depending on the number of documents and the time.
• Include with the documents a S.A.E. with the correct registered or recorded postage fee for the safe return of your documents (1st class recorded is strongly recommended).
• Should you require your translated and original documentation to be sent to the Greek Consulate for legalisation, following the translation, you should enclose another set of self-addressed and stamped envelope bearing the Consulate’s address and the correct amount of its cost (currently £14 per document).

Both individuals concerned must apply for and collect the marriage licence upon arrival in Greece. They should have their passports with them, at all times.

At the wedding, the bride and bridegroom should each be accompanied by one adult witness (who may be a relative) and who will produce his/her passport upon request.

After the wedding you are required to declare your marriage at the local Register Office.
